Happiness is a facet of the diamond within you

Thought of the moment, courtesy of American essayist Agnes Repplier:

It is not easy to find happiness in ourselves, and it is not possible to find it elsewhere.

So many of us spend so much time, effort and money searching for external triggers that will make (and keep) us happy. We look to friends, partners, kids, houses, jobs, vacations, material possessions and the like to somehow “complete” us. But the truth is that there are no magic bullets of happiness zinging around, waiting to make contact with our lives. It doesn’t work that way.

Happiness is a much more elusive and internal entity. Think of it as one facet of a complex “emotional gemstone” that lies at the core of your being. There, it competes and combines with other emotional facets (such as guilt, shame, fear, regret and confidence) to colour your thought patterns and beliefs, direct your self-talk (or lack of it), and shape your choices, attitudes, and reactions to what happens in the world around you.

Some people naturally operate with their happiness facet well-polished and facing forward, where it can exert the most influence over their day-to-day lives. Other people struggle to find their happiness facet in the first place.

The good news is that happiness exists inside each and every one of us. With patience, dedication and positive self-care, we can all find our inner happiness, shine it up, and turn it outwards to reflect its bright light into the world.
